Reducing Alarm Fatigue in Hospitals: A Quieter Approach with Concentric CareĀ

Alarm fatigue remains a persistent challenge in hospitals, where healthcare staff can be exposed to thousands of alarms each shift. This constant alarm noise barrage can lead to desensitisation, delayed responses and ultimately, negative impacts on patient care. Ā
Maitland Hospital made alarm noise a key priority to solve to provide a better care experience for staff and patients. To address this, they implemented our Concentric Care platform, which was co-designed with Maitland Hospitalās clinical staff to minimise unnecessary alarm sounds.
Concentric Care at Maitland HospitalĀ
The Concentric Care clinical workflow and communication platform included a custom hierarchical call and alarm delivery system, allowing lower-priority alerts to remain silent initially, while only higher priority alarms remained audible.
Each patient has an assigned nurse who can respond to alarms via a clinical-grade smart phone, a staff station console, or by attending to the patient in person. If an alarm goes unattended for a specified period, it escalates to the backup nurse assigned as the secondary contact point. In the event of truly high-priority calls, audible tones are triggered immediately.
Results: A quieter, more focused hospital environmentĀ
Researching the outcome of the implementation of Concentric Care at Maitland Hospital, the team conducted a 12-month study, revealing significant improvements in alarm management and noise reduction.
Over the study period, the hospital recorded over 262,000 calls and alarms. Of these, 84.8% remained silent until escalated, resulting in a reduction of 1,940 hours of alarm noise across six inpatient units. This translated into approximately 80 full days of reduced alarm sounds.
High-priority alarms, mainly fall alerts for high-risk patients, still produced some noise but were restricted to critical situations. By preserving audible alarms for urgent needs, the platform minimised distractions for staff, allowing them to focus on alarms requiring immediate attention.
Reducing Alarm Noise with Concentric CareĀ Ā
Our Concentric Care platformās tailored approach to managing alarm noise marks a significant step toward a quieter and safer hospital setting.
The noise-reduction strategy that our platform enables has shown promise in reducing alarm fatigue in staff and fostering a less stressful healthcare environment for staff and patients alike. By managing alarm noise with Concentric Care, hospitals can better support staff in delivering timely care and enhance quality, staff focus and patient comfort.
