Box Hill Hospital implements the Responder 5 nurse call and workflow solution and the Concierge HiMed to enhance care team coordination and patient experience.

Box Hill Hospital

Box Hill Hospital is a major referral centre for the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and has been serving this community since 1956. The vision for its redevelopment was to create a contemporary, technologically advanced healthcare facility that would serve patients and their families now and into the future.

The Challenge

The new, state-of-the-art clinical services building provides a much larger emergency department, 10 new operating theatres, improved and expanded specialist services, and an increase of more than 200 beds (621 beds in total). The communication systems at the new site needed to help clinical staff to be more efficient in this larger facility, while enabling access to clinical information by the bedside.

The Solution

In selecting the right technology partner, the Box Hill Hospital Redevelopment project team explored a number of solutions from various different vendors. Upon reviewing the technology requirements, Rauland Australia proposed an advanced hospital communication solution and a flexible platform for EMR access and patient entertainment services.

At the bedside, Responder 5 provides smart nurse call functionality; enabling patients to specify what assistance is required and two-way patient and nurse communication. The system’s power to deliver efficiencies however, comes from its additional capability to connect others and support coordinated patient care.

The HiMed Cockpit point-of-care terminals provide access to clinical records, phone and web communication, and entertainment options – all from one powerful thin client platform. Clinical staff can have secure access to view and edit the patient’s EMR, while patients stay connected and entertained by access to phone, internet, TV and video on demand.

Outcomes

Here are just some of the ways it helps the team at Box Hill Hospital to provide exceptional patient care:

  • Nurses and patients are always connected

The multi-button nurse call unit allows the patients to select ‘Pain’, ‘Water’, ‘Toilet’, or the standard ‘Nurse’ assistance. The call is received on the designated nurse’s phone and they are able to speak directly to the patient to assure them that assistance is on the way, or to further clarify their needs. To ensure a quick response, if the designated nurse is not immediately available, the call is automatically routed to another staff member.

  • Fast, direct communication saves nursing time

Nurses know what a patient needs when they receive a call and are able to prioritise accordingly; a call for ‘Toilet’ assistance will be more urgent for example than one for ‘Water’. They are also able to come prepared with what they need to attend to the patient’s call, saving additional time walking to and from the nurses’ station. Each nurse has their own phone and is able to contact their patients or colleagues from wherever they are on site.

  • Customised workflows help teams collaborate

The four-button workflow stations at each bed enable nurses to quickly request assistance from supporting staff involved in patient care. One touch of the ‘Transport’ button directly contacts the porter team with the room and bed details; ‘Cleaning Needed’ alerts housekeeping; while ‘Cleaning in Progress’ and ‘Bed Ready’ communicates bed status to other parts of the hospital and supports quick and seamless bed turnover.

  • A quiet healing environment helps to enhance the patient experience

Patient initiated nurse calls go directly to their nurse’s phone; there is no need for an audible ward-wide notification. Workflow stations help to eliminate phone-calls to coordinate common tasks. Even the hospital’s busiest wards are significantly more quiet, calm and peaceful – though not any less busy.

  • Patients can stay connected and have flexible entertainment options

Each patient terminal is programmed with its direct phone line and provides internet access for browsing and online communication. Patients can choose from several entertainment options including TV, radio and movies.
